Deborah Scott, cosmetic scientist, expert therapist and co-founder of the Skin-RG skincare range can be said to know a thing or two about organic, good for you, skincare products. Deborah recently sat down with our resident expert and therapist Anneli to answer some important questions regarding our skin and the products we use on it.
Here at Ilu Hub we adore Deborah, her brand and their approach to planet and people friendly products. As the only New Zealand based stockist, we’ve been taken under Deborah’s wing and we aren’t complaining about it! We wax lyrical about the incredible results we see when our clients use Skin-RG’s natural, organic, skin care products at every moment we can. We hope this interview gives you the introduction you need to their products that have won award after award for very good reason!
So grab yourself a cuppa, cosy up on the sofa and take a moment to join the wisdom and passion of these two beautiful women as they share a conversation on the one thing they are so passionate about: organic, natural skincare.
You’ll discover where to begin when it comes to a skincare routine, why really solely on nutrition isn’t the answer to glowing skin, why homemade remedies and oils aren’t enough for most people, what makes Skin-RG products so unique and why leaning on apps to tell you which products to buy might actually lead you astray!
Anneli:
I am a firm believer of prevention, therefore I make sure I use skincare daily and feed it with all the goodness and right products. What would be your best advice for someone who is starting with skincare and when would be the best time to start?
Deborah:
The younger the better. We agree with dermatologists that a basic routine should begin at 12 using a gentle cleanser, moisturiser and a sunscreen. Our organics collection is perfect place to begin if they are blemish free.
For young ladies who enjoy make up our Flash Balm or Super Rich Cream Cleanser is our go to recommendation.
And Cellular Repair Mosturiser is great for those with Normal Combination Skin.
Pure Shield Sunscreen is the perfect protection for young skin against sun damage.
Most of my in clinic young ones use Diamond Blue Cleanser and Lumiere Matt Moisturiser as they are struggling with hormones and diet which is causing breakouts. I lead them through how to tackle those breakouts with skincare but also with nutrition.
As all our products contain no plastics in the form of Nylon, Vinyl or Acetates so they do not clog young skin.
Anneli:
We know that nutrition is so important when talking about skin, some people think that great nutrition should be enough and don’t think about feeding skin topically. What would be your best advice?
Deborah:
Most oral nutrients are “up taken” by main organs before they can reach the skin.
Most skincare on the market is not enough to deliver the broad nutrition that we need. So it is vital to closely examine skincare before embarking on a journey with it.
It is so easy to get swept up in promises and packaging, especially plastic free! Suddenly the customer finds themselves using products that are designed to make profit. This is where Skin-RG comes in. We place performance before profit. Also remember that all of our packaging is silicone free, even the airless pumps are Soil Association Approved! And are fully recyclable!
Anneli:
There are a lot of people who prefer to mix their own face oils (not using anything else, just face oil) and don’t invest in good skincare products because they want to minimize plastic waste. What are your thoughts and advice?
Deborah:
This is where Skin-RG comes in, as I said above we place performance before profit. There is a huge amount of packaging greenwashing, companies claim this and that but actually most glass is not recycled back into glass and paper tubes with product on it are not always recyclable.
In the UK, packing that has residue on it cannot be recycled unless fully washed first. Glass in the UK is mixed with other substances to make loft insulation, yet companies keep claiming their packaging is made into glass. Which is not true. The card used in our products is recyclable, a lot of paper and tubes if they have coating or color cannot be recycled. It all depends on what it is made from, where it comes from and what’s been inside it so it’s an extremely complex situation.
In terms of mixing oils there are 5 types of Rosehip Oil (just to give you an idea), 1 is say 10 dollars a kilo, 1 is 100 dollars a kilo, the difference is how it is grown, where it is grown, harvested, extracted and its certifications. The difference is the nutrients held within the 100 dollar one. There is no comparison. We choose our ingredients carefully, we examine them to see their attributes and we test them to see the results. A client may say “oh it’s organic” but that can mean many different types of product.
Anneli:
What makes your product and formulations so unique?
Deborah:
Our Quanta Technology is unique. There is nothing in the world like it. We are a nutricosmetic brand, this means we derive “additional” bio mimetic (skin similar/loving) nutrients, vitamins and aminos from plant materials and we are using advanced technology to do it.
In our products you’ll find Hyaluronic Acid but it’s animal free, MSM, aminos, MAP – Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate (Vitamin C), Tetra C, peptides and so on.
You can read more about the technology that makes Skin-RG products so unique on our website.
Anneli:
What are your thoughts on the INCI decoder apps? (these apps are designed to quickly decode ingredients in skincare products)
Deborah:
It is such a wonderful idea to have an instant checker to help make decisions on whether a product is worthy or not especially when in a drug store setting. However, the accuracy of an app depends on the quality of the information provided. These apps don’t always consider the various types of ingredients available, such as synthetic, natural, organic, or premium organic.
For instance, the app may only display synthetic ingredients and not show the organic version. Indeed, we have had direct contact with a company that did not take into account that some of our key ingredients were organic, not synthetic and therefore did not reflect our formulas correctly.
Are you searching for truly clean skin care?
Without a doubt, there will be more from Deborah and the wonderful conversations we have with her in the future. We hope this chat has awakened some curiosity within you and that you might begin to question that everything is not quite what is said on the tin or packaging!
Skin-RG is one of our favorite brands to recommend and all for good reason. They are transparent, honest and doing that utmost to make products that are people and planet friendly and that also perform incredibly!
